Create Chinese GIFs

I'm taking the generator off-line for a while for repairs. Until it is fixed, you can use the mirror at NTUAA, the Java GIF generator or the TigerNT GIF generator. Also, if you're interested in hosting a mirror to the GIF generator, you can download and untar this file and set it up on your own server. You'll need several megabytes of space, CGI access, and some knowledge of CGI and the Perl programming language.

Type or copy the text you want to use into the text area. A maximum of 30 lines of text is allowed. The maximum length of each line is 40 characters or 80 letters (or a mix). Currently Big5 (Traditional Chinese) and GB (Simplified Chinese) are supported. This tool will not translate English to Chinese!

There is now a new version of this tool with more features.

Please do not write scripts to access this program directly! That's how it got shut down the last time. If you want GIF's of every Chinese character in GB, Big5, or Unicode, then download this archive file. Be careful, there are 21,000 separate GIF's that will be unpacked, indexed by their Unicode value.

If you try to do multiple GIFs in one session, the browser will attempt to cache each result. This means that the picture that appears will be the one you had done previously. To get the current GIF, click on "View->Reload Frame" (if the GIF appears in a frame) or "View->Reload" (if the GIF appears in the top browser window) from your browser menu and say "Yes" when it asks if you want to repost form data. The current GIF should then appear.

To save the GIF to your computer, use the "File->Save Frame" or "File->Save As" menu option on your browser, rather than clicking the right mouse button on the GIF and asking to "Save Image As". If you use the right mouse button to save, the browser will seem to have saved the GIF but will have actually saved undisplayable garbage.

I'm interested in hearing your ideas and suggestions for this tool. Please visit my contact page with your comments. If you came to this page directly, you might also want to take a look at some of my other on-line Chinese tools.
